How does the Incredibles fit in the Pixar Theory?
What is the movie about?
Hailed as one of Pixar’s best films, The Incredibles is a unique story
that blends multiple genres into one. The movie takes place somewhere between
the 1950’s and 1960’s. However, the world is very futuristic. We know that The
Incredibles is set in this time because a lady named Edna Mode (superhero
costume designer) mentions certain dates. Basically, Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible)
meets up with Edna, for a new suit. Mr. Incredible wants to have a cape on the
suit but Edna says that capes have doomed many superheroes lives. She says that
in ’57 and ’58 two superheroes (who wore capes) died. Another giveaway is when
Bob is reading a newspaper we see a newspaper that has the date 1968.
The movie starts in 1950 by introducing us to supers. They are superheroes who fight crime. They all have superpowers like super strength and invisibility. We are told at the start of the movie that as well as Mr. Incredible and his fellow supers saving lives they also caused civilians bodily harm. This cost the government an incredible about of money in lawsuits. One important fact is that the government controlled and was responsible for the supers. In order to save their money, the government has to force the supers into living normal lives. |
15 years later:15 years later Bob and Helen (Elastigirl) have three kids. Violet, a shy girl who can turn invisible, Dash, a competitive boy who has super speed and Jack Jack is a baby who secretly has amazing powers. You can see that all of the character’s powers are based on their personalities. Bob, who cannot cope with hiding his powers any longer, embarks on a dangerous mission for an international organization. The mission is to destroy a rogue artificial intelligence, the Omnidroid. Bob completes the mission but is betrayed by the inventor of the Omnidroid, Syndrome. We learn that Syndrome is actually Buddy Pine, a wannabe superhero from the start of the movie and he is also Mr. Incredible’s biggest fan. Buddy begs Mr. Incredible to let him be his sidekick but Mr. Incredible refuses as he works alone and Buddy has no powers. Buddy Pine then made incredible inventions and over time became Syndrome. Syndrome invented two big things, one the Omnidroid that can destroy supers and has an ability that lets it learn what its attacker’s special moves are. His second invention was Zero Point Energy, which scientists aren’t even close to figuring out. On his mission Mr. Incredible defeats the Omnidroid. Soon after, Syndrome builds a new and improved Omnidroid, which even Mr. Incredible can’t defeat. The Parr family come to help him out, but get captured themselves. Syndrome reveals his plan to them, which is to unleash the Omnidroid on Metroville (where the Parr family lives) so that he can defeat it in front of everyone and he will become their hero. He would then sell his technology, so everyone can be super. That way nobody would ever be super again. However the Omnidroid over powers him. The Incredibles escape and save the day. In an attempt to get a new sidekick, he kidnaps Jack Jack but the baby unleashes his power on Syndrome, causing Syndrome’s downfall. In the end the family get to keep their super personalities, after working out a deal with the government. There is one big question but. Why is technology so advanced? In the movie we see that technology is much more advanced, even thought it was set in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Mr. Incredible’s car has a GPS and can run on autopilot, Edna Mode uses advanced computers and security and Syndrome has access to futuristic gadgets. One theory is that Mr. Incredible worked for the government, so he got a lot of fancy gadgets. However, this doesn’t explain why the Parr family have a flat screen TV, Jack Jack’s babysitter has a Mozart CD (CD’s were not around until the 1980’s and Dash’s teacher has a VHS tape (this wasn’t available until the 1970’s).Now, where on Earth does the Omnidroid get its energy from? Humans. The Omnidroid gets its energy from humans, proving the fact that humans are batteries. |
The Facts/Evidence
- Syndrome creates and uses Zero Point Energy, which is later use by toys
- The Omnidroid is the first sign of Artificial Intelligence turning against humans.
